How A Shirt Inspired NC Bride’s Wedding Vows

Shante Lipscomb had no idea a year ago she’d be saying “I do” this past Sunday. What started out as a simple introduction to fiancé Tyree, quickly blossomed into a friendship built to last. The days became weeks, the moments turned into months, and somehow Tyree had convinced Shante that loving each other forever wasn’t a difficult commitment.

Shante said “Yes!” to becoming the now Mrs. Lipscomb.

Planning was off to a smooth start until Tyree asked Shante to do the unthinkable — write their own wedding vows. What would she say? How would she find the words? The EMS responder who has talked people through countless crises had now found that her pen had run dry.

In the weeks leading up to her wedding, she found drawing closer to the big day with an empty sheet of paper in her hand. One night as she lay in bed decompressing from the day, she stumbled upon local therapist Reketta Brown modeling a sweatshirt created by Valisa on Instagram. There it was. The words she had been looking for we’re embroidered across her screen — “Today Is The Day”

Shante sat up in the bed and the river of words she had been searching her heart for began to flow. She wrote:

“Today is the day. You coming into my life has been the breath of fresh air that I didn’t know I needed, the joy that I didn't know I lacked, the strength in the midst of life’s storms and the unconditional love that I felt I didn’t deserve. Today is the day. Today is the day I choose to spend the rest of my life with you. Today is the day for my second chance at love. The day that I willingly let go of my fears and welcome the warm embrace of true love. Today is the day that my unfailing love for you is boldly on display… to restore hope and confidence that God’s promises will always be fulfilled. Miracles still happen. Our love for each other is yet another example of God’s love towards us. Perfectly imperfect. So on today, I promise to love you for who you are, and for who you are yet to become. I promise to be patient, and to remember that all things between us are rooted in love. I promise to nurture your dreams and to help you reach them. I promise to share my whole heart with you, and to remember to show you how deeply I care for you, no matter the challenges that may come our way. I promise to love you loyally, fiercely and graciously—for as long as we both shall live.”
